Welcome Airstreamers and friends! The Western North Carolina Unit is affiliated with WBCCI Region 3 which covers Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The Wally Byam Caravan Club International is the RV Club of Airstream Owners named for Wally Byam who was the inventor of the Airstream travel trailer. It is a nonprofit organization with headquarters in Jackson Center, Ohio. To be a member and participate in club activities, you must own a self-contained recreational vehicle made by Airstream Inc. - also located in Jackson Center, Ohio.
The Western North Carolina Unit of the WBCCI began organization on November 17, 1977 when thirty-four members of the Carolinas Unit met in an upper room at the S&W Cafeteria in Asheville, North Carolina.
The group was called to order by T. Ray Gibbs, who with his wife, Louise, had laid extensive ground work for an amicable separation from the Mother Unit, The Carolinas Unit. He was chosen as the first President. Others elected were: Lloyd Turner, 1st Vice President; Bill Martin, 2nd Vice President; Nita Dunlap, Recording Secretary; Louise Gibbs, Corresponding Secretary; and Frances Hammer, Treasurer.
Working with the President of Region 3 of WBCCI, application for a temporary charter was made to International Headquarters. The Charter was granted and presented to WNCU President T. Ray Gibbs by Region 3 President Jerry Crapnell at the Sarasota Rally in 1978.
The first Rally was held at Wray Frazier Campground in Swannanoa, April, 1978. All founding members were present.
